Reggio Calabria pushes museum on 1970 uprising amid local political debate

Councilor Daniele Romeo presented an order for the Reggio Calabria municipal council to consider establishing a Museum of the Revolt of 1970. The proposal, welcomed by Mayor Francesco Cannizzaro, aims to create a space for documents, photographs, testimonies and artifacts so that residents and visitors can learn about the historic uprising that shaped the city’s identity.

Five Star Movement councilor Giovanna Milena Roschetti criticised the plan, calling it “an operation of mass distraction” and saying “Reggio Calabria needs a future, not a nostalgic and identity‑based distraction.” She argued the city should prioritise services such as healthcare, water supply, waste management and youth employment, and pledged to monitor public spending on the project.
