Reggio Calabria to begin Calopinace road redevelopment

Reggio Calabria Mayor Francesco Cannizzaro has announced the immediate redevelopment of the Calopinace ramps, one of the city's most heavily trafficked road infrastructures. Following an extraordinary municipal council meeting, works are scheduled to begin on Monday, October 26, at 9:00 PM.

The project includes a complete resurfacing of both carriageways using more durable materials to replace the deteriorating old asphalt. Additionally, the administration will replace existing road protections that have been deemed non-compliant with safety standards and aesthetically unpleasing. The plan also features new road signage and the installation of speed cameras in both directions to improve driver safety.

The intervention follows a period of significant road degradation and a high accident rate. Local municipal police data reported that over a seven-year period leading up to 2024, the area saw more than 120 accidents, resulting in 9 deaths and 84 injuries.
