Reggio Calabria to hold protest during general strike

A general strike scheduled for Friday, October 30, will include a demonstration in Reggio Calabria. Protesters are set to gather at 9:00 AM in Piazza De Nava, marching along Corso Garibaldi toward Piazza Italia.

The mobilization addresses several socio-economic grievances, including the rising cost of living driven by high fuel prices, food costs, and utility bills, contrasted against stagnant wages and pensions. In Calabria, specific concerns include the state of public healthcare, characterized by long waiting lists and staffing shortages in emergency rooms, as well as inadequate transportation systems.

Protesters are also calling for a reallocation of public funds, arguing that resources currently directed toward military rearmament and infrastructure projects, such as the Strait of Messina Bridge, should instead be invested in schools, hospitals, and social welfare. Additionally, there is opposition to the potential militarization of the Port of Gioia Tauro.
