Reggio Calabria to host conference on 1860 Garibaldian expedition

A historical conference titled ‘The Strait Area and Calabria in 1860’ will be held on Friday, September 25, 2026, at the Polo Culturale Mattia Preti in Reggio Calabria. Hosted at the Palazzo Tommaso Campanella, the event aims to reconstruct the strategic role of the Strait of Messina and the military and political events that occurred in Calabria during Giuseppe Garibaldi’s expedition.

The conference, supported by the Deputazione di Storia Patria per la Calabria and the Anassilaos cultural association, features various scholars examining the Risorgimento from different regional perspectives. Topics include the Garibaldian capture of Messina, the 1860 revolution between Reggio and Catanzaro, and the specific historical context of Cosenza. Professor Carmine Pinto will provide the concluding remarks, framing these local Calabrian events within the broader context of Italian unification.
