Reggio Calabria to host UN Special Rapporteur Heba Hagrass

Reggio Calabria will host Heba Hagrass, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the rights of persons with disabilities, from September 24 to 27. Hagrass, an Egyptian sociologist and international consultant, was appointed to the role in 2023 by the UN Human Rights Council.

In her capacity as Special Rapporteur, Hagrass monitors the implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities by member states and reports to the UN General Assembly in New York. The convention, adopted in 2006, has 193 signatories, including Italy.

The visit follows an invitation from Mayor Francesco Cannizzaro and MEP Giusi Princi. Hagrass confirmed her attendance via a letter to the institutional representatives, agreeing to the proposed dates to engage in dialogue regarding rights, inclusion, and participation.
