Reggio Children hosts Israeli educators amid political controversy
A delegation of approximately 22 to 25 Israeli and American Jewish educators has arrived at the Loris Malaguzzi International Centre in Reggio Emilia to study the ‘Reggio Emilia Approach’. The visit, scheduled through October 16, has sparked significant political controversy and local protests.
Activists and some political figures had called for the cancellation of the visit, citing concerns regarding potential links between the visiting educators and organizations supporting Israeli defense forces. In response to the tension, Reggio Children has requested that all network members adhere to a charter for democratic and participatory education, which includes condemning all forms of genocide.
The arrival of the Israeli teachers was met with accusations from the president of the Milanese Jewish Community, who criticized the city's handling of the situation. Meanwhile, local political groups have characterized the backlash as a ‘defeat’ for the city. Despite the protests and a tense atmosphere among some employees, the delegation has begun its program, which includes studying pedagogy, child development, and the history of the educational model. The group was welcomed by Reggio Children President Maddalena Tedeschi and local officials.
