Reggio Emilia churches targeted by thefts and vandalism

The Diocese of Reggio Emilia-Modena has reported an increasing frequency of thefts, vandalism, and profanations targeting churches across the province. Vicar General Monsignor Giovanni Rossi issued an appeal for vigilance following a recent attempted forced entry into the tabernacle at the Church of the Immaculate in the Bismantova district.

Incidents have been documented in various locations, including mountain areas such as Garfagnolo and Rosano di Vetto, as well as the Oratory of the Santissima Annunziata in Rubiera. Past incidents include a 2021 profanation in Cà de Caroli and vandalism at the Church of San Giacomo in the city center.

Despite many buildings being equipped with alarm systems and video surveillance, these recurring crimes are leading to the restriction of access hours to places of worship. The Diocese noted that these acts affect both historical-artistic heritage and the religious sentiment of the community.
