Reggio Emilia faces antisemitism accusations over educator visit

A controversy has erupted in Reggio Emilia involving Reggio Children and a delegation of Jewish educators from the United States and Israel. The dispute arose after a request was made for participants to sign a document expressing commitment to democratic values, peace, and the rejection of violence and genocide.

American educators from the Paradigm Project decided to postpone their study visit, alleging that the request required them to explicitly distance themselves from the policies of the Israeli government. Walker Meghnagi, president of the Milan Jewish Community, condemned the move as antisemitism, comparing the administration’s methods to those of the Third Reich and calling for the resignation of the mayor.

Reggio Emilia Mayor Marco Massari has rejected all accusations of antisemitism. He stated that the document is a universal charter of values intended for all international delegations and does not target any specific religion or nationality. He clarified that the initiative promotes peace and human rights rather than political stances against specific governments.
