Regierungspräsidium Darmstadt inspects Rhine and Main levees
The Regierungspräsidium (RP) Darmstadt has completed its annual dike inspections along the Rhine and Main rivers in Hesse to ensure flood protection. While inspectors found no major structural damage, they noted that increasing drought is stressing the grass cover on the levees.
The department is currently working with the Upper Nature Conservation Authority to find solutions to make the grass cover more resilient to heat and drought. Maintaining a healthy grass layer is critical, as damaged vegetation can compromise a dike's ability to withstand floodwaters.
In addition to the annual inspections, the RP conducts regular route controls on all state levees. Key issues identified during inspections include overgrowth from adjacent properties and damage caused by unauthorized paths or 'wild ramps' created by recreational use, which can leave deep tracks in the embankments.
