Regina Margherita Hospital performs innovative surgery to treat cerebral palsy

Surgeons at the Regina Margherita Children's Hospital and the CTO Hospital in Turin have successfully performed an innovative hyperselective neurectomy on a 14-year-old boy named Giovanni. The procedure was designed to treat spasticity caused by cerebral palsy, a condition that affects approximately 800 to 1,000 children in the Piedmont region alone.

Before the surgery, Giovanni faced significant challenges with daily activities such as dressing himself, putting on socks, and eating independently due to limited upper limb control. The multidisciplinary surgical team, which included hand surgeon Dr. Nathalie Bini and orthopedic microsurgeon Dr. Paolo Titolo, integrated specialized expertise in pediatric upper limb surgery and peripheral nerve microsurgery.

Following the operation and a subsequent rehabilitation program, Giovanni has achieved a significant improvement in his ability to use his upper limbs and regain personal autonomy. Medical officials noted that this innovative approach opens new therapeutic opportunities for children with neuromotor pathologies, aiming to improve their overall quality of life.
