Region Gävleborg health centers reorganized into company

In Region Gävleborg, political parties including the Sweden Democrats, Moderates, Christian Democrats, and the Healthcare Party have transitioned region-run health centers into a limited company (aktiebolag). The stated goal is to introduce more business-like management to address a primary care deficit estimated between 100 and 180 million SEK.

Jan Lahenkorva, Vice Chairman of the Health and Medical Care Committee for the Social Democrats, argues that this corporate structure creates a conflict between business profitability and healthcare accessibility. He notes that a company must balance costs and revenues, which may lead to decisions based on the size and profitability of a center rather than patient needs. Lahenkorva advocates for dissolving the corporate form and returning the health centers directly to the control of Region Gävleborg to ensure that location and service levels are determined by medical necessity and political decisions rather than economic optimization.
