Region Midtjylland to pilot expanded prehospital role in acute nursing

Region Midtjylland is planning a pilot program in the Horsens area to expand the role of the prehospital service in acute nursing. Starting in 2027, when the region assumes responsibility for acute nursing from municipalities, the prehospital service may manage visitation, disposition, and medical tasks during night hours (23:00 to 08:00). This model aims to test central coordination and capacity management before deciding on a wider rollout.

Four out of five new health councils in the region—Horsens, Aarhus, Midt, and Vestjylland—support this development, though the Kronjylland council has not recommended it. Under the standard regional model, acute hospitals will handle these duties 24/7, but the Horsens pilot specifically explores night-time autonomy for prehospital teams.

Parallel to these organizational shifts, discussions regarding Denmark's broader healthcare reform emphasize the importance of new health and care facilities. These facilities are intended to provide continuity for patients requiring medical intervention without hospital admission. Experts suggest these centers should remain distinct from local hospital departments to avoid misallocating physician resources, while ensuring high medical quality through access to specialists and consistent national standards.
