Robotics industry faces challenges in transitioning from demos to real-world deployment
The robotics industry is currently navigating a transition from technical demonstration to practical industrial and consumer application. At the 2026 World Robot Conference in Beijing, Xiong Rong, chief scientist at the Zhejiang Institute of Robotics, highlighted the challenges of moving humanoid robots from controlled demos to unpredictable physical environments. Key hurdles include the need for higher precision (sub-millimeter), improved generalization across diverse tasks, and the ability to handle non-structured environments without constant retraining.
Simultaneously, the AGIC Shenzhen International General Artificial Intelligence Industry Expo emphasized a shift toward connecting technology with real market demand, focusing on whether AI can be delivered as a stable, purchasable commodity. While the industry sees high interest, with over 18,000 overseas buyers registered at the Shenzhen event, a significant gap remains between demonstration and deployment.
This gap is further reflected in the market's struggle to move from B2B to B2C. While some companies are attempting to enter the consumer market with home robots, critics argue these products often lack substantive utility, functioning more like mobile smart speakers. Currently, a large portion of global humanoid robot shipments are used for testing or exhibition rather than actual industrial production, as companies seek ways to achieve sustainable revenue beyond pilot projects and framework agreements.
