Regional animal welfare and engagement initiatives in Germany
In Thuringia, the State Agency for Political Education (TLPB) has launched a public contest to name its new mascot, a wildcat. The initiative, which is open to children, youths, and adults until November 15, 2026, aims to engage younger generations with political education. The wildcat was chosen for its regional significance, as the species is native to the state and inhabits areas such as the Hainich National Park.
In Lower Saxony, the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection is launching a statewide cat neutering campaign starting November 5. The program provides free neutering services for free-roaming domestic cats at participating veterinary practices through mid-December.
Supported by a combined fund of over 200,000 euros from the state and various animal welfare organizations, the initiative seeks to control the population of stray cats and reduce animal suffering. Officials noted that the funds may be exhausted quickly due to high demand and emphasized the importance of neutering household cats before they are allowed outdoors.
