Regional Australian businesses confront rising costs and efficiency challenges
A logistics provider operating across several depots in regional Australia reported an annual saving of AUD 3.2 million after standardising processes, centralising customer support, and automating scheduling and billing, delivering efficiency gains equivalent to 70 full‑time staff.
The 2026 Small Business Perspectives Report released by Cosboa found that 87 % of regional Australian SMEs experienced higher operating expenses over the past year, with 73 % seeing profit declines and only 18 % expecting improvement. Respondents highlighted housing shortages, infrastructure gaps and labour scarcity as major constraints, while 77 % reported stress related to running their businesses. The report’s CEO urged policy measures to reduce regulatory burdens, improve housing and connectivity, and support adoption of new technologies.
Both pieces underscore the pressure on regional enterprises to cut costs and boost productivity amid structural challenges.
