Regional authorities implement new early warning systems for extreme weather

Regional authorities in Argentina and Mexico are implementing or discussing advanced early warning systems to mitigate the impact of extreme weather events.

In Querétaro, Mexico, Governor Mauricio Kuri González announced the launch of the ‘Alerta Matías’ Early Warning System (SIAT). This system utilizes SMS and the AppQro application to provide timely notifications regarding torrential rains, floods, and forest fires. The initiative was established following historic rainfall in August 2025 that resulted in five fatalities.

In the border region of Concordia, Argentina, and Salto, Uruguay, discussions have emerged regarding the implementation of Cell Broadcast technology. This follows a severe storm in July that caused significant damage, including power outages and a fatality in Osvaldo Magnasco, where a falling tree struck a residence. While Argentina has approved projects and allocated resources for similar technology, local leaders are advocating for more robust, automated mobile alerts to reach citizens in high-risk zones.
