Latin America seismic activity explained by geologist
Geologist Andrés Folguera, from the University of Buenos Aires and Conicet, has addressed concerns regarding a recent series of significant earthquakes across Latin America. Recent seismic events with magnitudes exceeding 7.0 have been reported in Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Mexico, and Costa Rica.
Folguera notes that while the frequency of these events causes public concern, they fall within statistical norms. Globally, approximately 18 earthquakes of magnitude 8.0 and 120 earthquakes of magnitude 6.0 to 7.0 occur annually. He suggests that some recent quakes, such as those in Colombia, Peru, and Costa Rica, may be tectonically connected as they occurred at similar depths along the interface of the Nazca and South American plates.
