Regional cycling infrastructure projects approved in Helmond and Tongeren-Borgloon

Local authorities in the Netherlands and Belgium are moving forward with infrastructure projects to enhance regional cycling routes, despite varying local concerns.

In Helmond, the municipal college has decided to proceed with paving the Goorsebaan. The project aims to improve the regional cycling connection between Helmond and Eindhoven, ensuring the path remains accessible year-round and for people with disabilities. While the municipality acknowledges potential ecological impacts on the Natuurnetwerk Brabant and the Goorloop valley, they plan to mitigate damage by preserving existing trees and utilizing the current path foundation.

In Belgium, the municipality of Tongeren-Borgloon has approved a project to pave the Oude Kolmont with cobblestones. The 700-meter incline is designed to attract cycling tourists and professional enthusiasts, positioning Limburg as a premier destination for multi-day cycling holidays. The steep profile is intended to provide a challenge similar to famous climbs used in major Flemish classics.
