Regional disparities in Japan's rental car and hospitality industries
New data released by Lumierre, based on the 2021 Economic Census, reveals significant regional differences in the density of rental car and hospitality businesses across Japan.
Regarding the rental car market, Okinawa Prefecture has the highest density with 14.92 establishments per 100,000 people. This is 4.9 times higher than Nara Prefecture, which has the lowest density at 3.02 establishments per 100,000 people. Other high-density regions include Kagoshima and Tottori, while the lowest densities are found in the Tokyo metropolitan and Kansai areas, including Saitama and Kanagawa.
In the hospitality sector, Nagano Prefecture leads with 12.76 hotels and inns per 10,000 people. This density is approximately 18.9 times higher than that of Saitama Prefecture, which recorded the lowest density at 0.67 establishments per 10,000 people. While mountainous and tourist-heavy prefectures like Yamanashi and Fukui rank highly, densely populated urban prefectures such as Fukuoka, Aichi, Kanagawa, Osaka, and Saitama show the lowest concentrations of hospitality businesses.
