Regional District of Nanaimo imposes Stage 3 outdoor watering limits

Effective June 12 2026, the Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) enacted Stage 3 outdoor watering restrictions for all its water service areas, except Decourcey and Surfside, which remain at Level 4. The rules limit lawn sprinkling to one day per week—odd‑numbered houses on Mondays and even‑numbered houses on Thursdays—with a maximum of two hours of watering either between 7 a.m.‑10 a.m. or 7 p.m.‑10 p.m. Vegetable gardens and drip‑irrigation systems are exempt.

The restrictions respond to early‑season dry conditions, below‑average rainfall and snowpack, and a provincial drought level 4 affecting eastern Vancouver Island. RDN aims to curb peak demand, protect essential household use, support fire safety, maintain ecosystem health, and preserve agricultural irrigation. Violations may result in fines, and residents are urged to check their water provider’s website for updates.
