Regional economic shifts show retail decline in Grosseto and export growth in Cosenza

Regional economic data from Italy reveals contrasting trends in the provinces of Grosseto and Cosenza. In Grosseto, the local economy faces a loss of approximately 54.6 million euros in potential consumption due to business closures. Between 2019 and 2025, the province saw a 10.9% decrease in commercial activities, totaling 364 fewer businesses. While this contraction is less severe than the Tuscan regional average of 14.7%, family-run neighborhood shops are increasingly being replaced by large-scale distribution and online retail.

Conversely, the province of Cosenza has seen a rise in exports. According to SACE data for the first quarter of 2026, total exports reached nearly 44 million euros, up from 40.35 million euros in the same period in 2025. The agrifood sector remains the primary driver, accounting for nearly 50% of the total, with food and beverages generating 19.67 million euros. While agricultural products saw a decline of 26.4%, the textile and clothing sector achieved a historic record of 650,000 euros in exports.
