Spain and France see inflation rise in August due to energy costs

Inflation in Spain and France has risen in August, driven primarily by increasing energy costs and fuel prices linked to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, specifically the conflict in Iran. In Spain, the annual inflation rate reached 4.3%, its highest level since early 2023. This spike was largely fueled by rising costs for fuels and lubricants. In response, the Spanish government announced it will increase the diesel tax discount to 20 cents per liter starting September 1 to mitigate the impact on households. Despite the rise in general inflation, Spain's core inflation, which excludes volatile energy and unprocessed food prices, decreased slightly to 2.9%.

In France, annual inflation accelerated to 2.7% in August, marking its highest level since May. The increase is also attributed to rising energy prices. These inflationary trends in both major Eurozone economies have strengthened expectations that the European Central Bank (ECB) may implement another interest rate hike in September to maintain its 2% inflation target.
