Regional education heads in Seogwipo and Yeoncheon announce new strategic visions

New heads of education offices in Seogwipo and Yeoncheon have outlined strategic visions to revitalize regional education and combat the challenges of declining student populations.

In Seogwipo, Superintendent Gang Ji-seon emphasized creating an educational ecosystem where the entire community participates in child-rearing. Key priorities include student safety, emotional support, and protecting teachers' rights. Gang aims to leverage Seogwipo’s natural and cultural assets to enrich the curriculum and intends to use the International Baccalaureate (IB) program as a catalyst for innovation across all public schools, rather than a privilege for specific institutions.

In Yeoncheon, Superintendent Lee Moon-gu is focusing on transforming the limitations of a rural, border region into opportunities for innovation. His ‘wall-breaking educational cooperation’ model seeks to integrate schools with local government, universities, and community institutions. To address the difficulties of small schools, Lee plans to implement a Yeoncheon-style joint curriculum and enhance student mobility through specialized transport services. His ultimate goal is to make Yeoncheon a place where families choose to stay because of the quality of education.
