Regional election candidates in Peru prepare for second-round debates
Candidates for regional governments in Peru are preparing for upcoming second-round elections. In Áncash, regional councilor-elect Martín Espinal has expressed his preference for Antonio Casana over Betto Barrionuevo. Espinal cited Casana’s private sector background and what he described as a “hoja de vida limpia” (clean record) as key factors, noting that Casana lacks a controversial past. Espinal has called for civil society to organize public debates to allow both candidates to present concrete proposals regarding regional projects and stalled works.
In La Libertad, candidates Aldo Carlos Mariños of Somos Perú and Elías Nicolás Rodríguez Zavaleta of Podemos Perú are scheduled to participate in a dialogue session titled “Pacto por una Mejor Región.” Organized by the Federación de Trabajadores en Construcción Civil del Perú (FTCCP), Capeco, and Conafovicer, the event will take place on October 30, 2026, in Trujillo. Each candidate will have 30 minutes to present their development proposals for the region ahead of the second-round vote on December 6.
