Regional festivals launch in Cagayan de Oro and North Cotabato

Regional festivals have commenced in the Philippines, highlighting indigenous heritage and agricultural productivity. In Cagayan de Oro, the month-long Higalaay Festival began with a Higaonon ritual near the Cagayan River to honor indigenous traditions and pray for a successful celebration. The festival includes the ‘Fiesta sa Kaumahan’ to support local farmers and features 53 events, such as a float parade, dragon boat races, and a film festival.

In North Cotabato, the 112th Kalivungan Festival opened with the Yaman ng Cotabato Travel and Trade Expo. The event showcases the agricultural strength of the province's 17 towns and one city. Governor Emmylou Taliño-Mendoza emphasized the importance of protecting local high-value crops and addressing industry challenges like counterfeit fertilizer. The festivities also include the Kavurunan Festival, featuring cultural dances and music from indigenous groups.
