Regional food preferences vary across Spain for beer accompaniments
A study by Alpha Research reveals significant regional differences in the types of tapas preferred to accompany beer across Spain. In the Murcia region, 22% of people choose nuts as their ideal accompaniment, nearly double the national average of 11%. Murcia is the only autonomous community where this option surpasses traditional favorites like Spanish ham, potato omelets, or pickled goods.
In Andalusia, as well as in Navarra, Cantabria, the Balearic Islands, Catalonia, Aragon, and the Valencian Community, the preferred choice is gildas, olives, and pickles, accounting for 19% of preferences nationally. Other regional trends include potato omelets, favored in Asturias, Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura, Galicia, Madrid, and the Basque Country, and Iberian ham or cold cuts, which lead in the Canary Islands, Castilla y León, and La Rioja.
According to the Spanish Brewers Association, going out for beers is a deeply ingrained social custom, with 84% of Spaniards considering it a typical activity. For many, it serves as a way to disconnect from routine or catch up with friends and family.
