German football: DFB plans league reform and major match schedules
The German Football Association (DFB) is planning an extraordinary congress on December 18, 2026, to decide on a major reform of the Regionalliga structure. President Bernd Neuendorf aims to reduce the current five regional leagues to four, implementing a 'compass model' where 20 teams per division are reorganized geographically each season to ensure direct promotion to the 3. Liga.
In the Bundesliga, match schedules through late November have been finalized, including high-profile fixtures such as the 'Klassiker' between FC Bayern München and Borussia Dortmund on October 31. Borussia Dortmund is also focused on long-term squad stability, with plans to initiate contract extensions for key players Julian Ryerson, Waldemar Anton, and goalkeeper Gregor Kobel.
In the DFB-Pokal, 1. FC Magdeburg is set to face Bayern München in the second round on October 28, while FC Schalke 04 will travel to Dynamo Dresden on the same date. Schalke's upcoming autumn schedule is notably dense, featuring seven matches in seven weeks, including a cup tie and several away fixtures.
