Regional governance updates in Nurmijärvi and Päijät-Häme

In Nurmijärvi, the municipal board has approved the new Suunta 2027–2028 service plan following significant debate. A 7–4 vote led to the removal of specific assessments regarding student numbers in rural schools. The board added a note stating that the impact of land-use development on rural school populations cannot yet be assessed as measures are ongoing. Additionally, several appendices concerning school sustainability and the impact of new construction on specific areas like Valkjärvi and Nukari were removed from the document.

In the Päijät-Häme region, the regional council issued a statement regarding the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency’s 2026–2034 program. The council warned that insufficient funding could delay critical road and rail projects. While the Risala–Mankala section of Highway 12 is included in the investment program, the council emphasized the need for holistic development of the highway, noting that the Joutjärvi–Risala section remains excluded despite being deemed highly profitable. The council also advocated for planning funding for the Savon oikorata, the Lahti–Heinola rail improvements, and the construction of an airport to support regional competitiveness and security of supply.
