Ecuador government distributes water pumps and aid to flood-affected farmers

The Ecuadorian government, through the Ministry of Economic Development and Productive Development (MDEP), is implementing a national program to distribute 1,778 motor-driven water pumps to agricultural producers across 15 provinces. This initiative, with an estimated total investment of $4 million, aims to help farmers evacuate excess water from flooded plots and facilitate irrigation during dry periods.

Recent distributions include approximately $59,000 worth of equipment for 190 producers in the Manabí province, covering cantons such as Chone, Tosagua, and Portoviejo. Additionally, 140 pumps were delivered to producers in Guayas, specifically in Jujan and Balzar, to mitigate agricultural losses. Since October 23, 603 pumps have already been distributed nationwide, representing an investment of roughly $497,000.

In addition to machinery, the government is providing contingency bonuses to families affected by heavy rains. In Guayas and Manabí, 134 people have already accessed economic assistance. The Ministry of Labor and Human Development is coordinating with the National Risk Management Secretariat to extend these bonuses to an additional 1,171 people in provinces including El Oro, Esmeraldas, and Los Ríos.
