Regional Growth Conference addresses development in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace

The 3rd Regional Growth Conference, titled “Eastern Macedonia and Thrace 2030: Borders of Development, Energy and Democracy,” was held in Komotini to discuss the economic future of the region. Mayors from Komotini, Xanthi, and Alexandroupoli, along with regional officials, identified several critical challenges facing local governance and growth.

Key issues raised include municipal understaffing, bureaucratic delays, and a lack of necessary funding for development projects. Participants emphasized the urgent need for a comprehensive strategic plan to prevent youth migration and to better integrate the region with Democritus University of Thrace.

Industrial leaders and representatives from organizations such as SEV and SEVE highlighted the need for improved transport networks, investment incentives, and specialized workforce training. While some local industries report increased export activity, experts warned that inadequate infrastructure and a shortage of skilled personnel continue to hinder regional productivity and the attraction of new capital.
