Regional health trends show varying longevity and access in Italy

Recent data highlights varying health and longevity trends across Italian regions. In Abruzzo, life expectancy at birth is 83.4 years, consistent with the national average, with 58.9 years lived in good health. Regional President Marco Marsilio noted that Abruzzo and Molise are the only southern regions exceeding the area's average for healthy years lived. The Abruzzo Longevity Forum was convened to discuss active aging, primary prevention, and territorial policies, supported by over 1.25 billion euros in development and cohesion funds aimed at improving infrastructure and services.

In Umbria, life expectancy is higher than the national average at 84.1 years. However, a report by the Gimbe Foundation indicates challenges in healthcare access. In 2024, approximately 12.2% of Umbria's residents—over 104,000 people—reported renouncing one or more healthcare services, a figure higher than the Italian average of 9.9%. This increase follows a trend where long waiting times and economic reasons lead millions of Italians to forgo medical examinations or visits. The report also noted a rise in out-of-pocket and insurance-mediated healthcare spending as public service gaps persist.
