São Paulo begins demolition of homes hit by Jaguaré explosion

The Government of São Paulo has commenced the demolition of 61 housing units in the Jaguaré district, located in the west zone of São Paulo. The homes were severely damaged by a gas leak and subsequent explosion in May, an incident that resulted in two deaths and affected at least 232 residents.

A partnership between the Companhia de Desenvolvimento Habitacional e Urbano (CDHU) and the Companhia de Saneamento Básico do Estado de São Paulo (Sabesp) will manage the recovery efforts. Sabesp will handle the contracting and funding of the works, totaling R$ 5.4 million, while CDHU will oversee technical management and inspection.

The first phase involves the manual deconstruction of the damaged structures to prevent risks to neighboring buildings, with completion expected by January 2027. This stage includes debris removal and soil stabilization. The second phase aims to reconstruct five homes and renovate approximately 200 other units, with a projected conclusion by the end of 2026. The project also includes plans for new public spaces, such as parks and green areas.
