Regional initiatives address water and nutrition in Guajira
In the Alta Guajira region of Zulia, Venezuela, authorities have delivered two water tanker trucks to the Cojoro community to improve potable water distribution. The operation of these vehicles will be managed by local communes. To support this effort, a desalination plant is under construction with a projected capacity of 10 liters of water per second, utilizing two newly built wells to convert seawater or brackish water into fresh water.
Additionally, plans are underway to install hybrid solar and wind energy generation systems in the area in collaboration with the National Electric Corporation (Corpoelec).
In Colombia, the University of La Guajira hosted the I International Congress of Research in Nutrition and Applied Sciences. The event brought together over 1,139 attendees to discuss the structural causes of acute malnutrition, particularly among indigenous Wayuu communities. Discussions focused on food sovereignty, climate variability, health service access, and technological solutions to address the region's high malnutrition rates.
