Regional initiatives expand support for children with disabilities
Various regional initiatives are expanding support for children with developmental disabilities and their families across the Balkans.
In Serbia, new legislation effective October 2026 introduces the status of caregiver parent, providing a monthly allowance of 65,000 dinars alongside mandatory pension and health insurance for those providing intensive care.
In Montenegro, the Municipality of Nikšić has launched a conference and training program titled ‘Autism and Communication’ to improve support systems. The initiative includes the provision of 15 communication devices to help children on the autism spectrum express their needs.
In Croatia, the ‘Inclusion in the Community Airwaves’ project in the Brod-Posavina County aims to improve social inclusion for children with developmental difficulties or those lacking parental care through workshops and psychosocial support.
In Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Iskra Association has opened a specialized center in Lokve, Hadžići, focusing on hippotherapy. This rehabilitation method uses the rhythmic movement of horses to assist individuals with motor, balance, and coordination challenges, particularly those with cerebral palsy.
