Regional initiatives launch in Argentina and Bolivia
In San Luis, Argentina, the Universidad Nacional de los Comechingones (UNLC) has presented progress on a Forest Fire Prevention Plan for the western Sierras Centrales. Developed alongside the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the national Environment Subsecretariat, the initiative operates under the REDD+ Argentina Results-Based Payment Program.
Funded by a one-million-dollar investment from the Green Climate Fund, the ten-year strategy aims to protect 177,800 hectares of native forest. Unlike traditional fire-fighting methods, this plan focuses on prevention to mitigate environmental, social, and economic impacts in the region spanning from Quines to La Punta.
In Bolivia, the Universidad Católica Boliviana (UCB) hosted the first trinational meeting, ‘Artesanos de la Unidad’. This summit brings together rectors and researchers from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, and UCB. The event focuses on addressing shared Latin American challenges, including human mobility, environmental protection, and heritage preservation, through collaborative research in border zones regarding water, energy, and migration.
