Regional initiatives promote agroecological urban gardens
Regional initiatives in Argentina and Uruguay are promoting agroecological urban gardens through specialized training and botanical research.
In Argentina, the Secretaría de Asistencia Directa and the Universidad Nacional de Jujuy (UNJu) are collaborating on a project to evaluate the impact of vegetable extracts as growth promoters and phytosanitary protectors. The initiative, titled “Evaluación del impacto de la aplicación de extractos vegetales como promotores del crecimiento y protectores fitosanitarios en huertas urbanas,” focuses on using natural preparations like infusions and macerations to strengthen agroecological management in school, family, and community gardens.
In Uruguay, the Intendencia Departamental de Lavalleja is implementing the “Sembrar, cosechar y conservar” program. This project provides workshops and spring-summer 2026 vegetable seeds to residents. The training covers crop planning, soil care, water efficiency, and seed conservation to support the establishment of neighborhood and home gardens.
