Regional Japanese initiatives revitalize agriculture and sake production
Regional efforts to revitalize local agriculture and traditional industries are gaining momentum through innovative sake production and community-focused initiatives in Japan.
In Ishikawa Prefecture, Yoshida Shuzo is implementing solar sharing by installing photovoltaic panels in rice paddies to promote decarbonization. The brewery has shifted 80% of its raw material rice to local varieties, such as ‘Ishikawa Mon’ and ‘Hyakumangoku no Shiro’, to support local farmers and ensure long-term stability through guaranteed purchase agreements.
In Shiga Prefecture, a group dedicated to preserving terraced rice fields in Takashima City has commercialized its first batch of sake, ‘Shirahige no Ryu’, using rice harvested from restored fields. This initiative aims to encourage more people to participate in maintaining these traditional landscapes.
Additionally, in Kyoto, Matsuo Taisha will host a ‘Sake High’ event, featuring a tasting of local sake mixed with sparkling water to promote interest in Japanese sake cocktails.
