Regional maritime updates: Matsu infrastructure bids and Hong Kong-Guangdong yachting pact
In Taiwan, Lienchiang County Magistrate Wang Chung-ming met with the Maritime and Port Bureau to advocate for improvements to maritime services in the Matsu Islands. Key proposals include upgrading vessels on the Dongyin-Juguang route from 19-ton to 49-ton capacity to enhance safety and quality. The county is also seeking better management of fixed flight schedules and expanded port infrastructure, such as deep-water piers and floating docks, to support medical, educational, and tourism needs.
In the Greater Bay Area, Hong Kong and Guangdong authorities have signed new arrangements to facilitate cross-border yacht visits. Following the June launch of the ‘Hong Kong yachts heading north’ initiative, the new ‘Guangdong yachts heading south’ program will allow yacht owners from Guangdong to enter Hong Kong waters more easily. This institutionalized framework aims to boost the yacht economy and promote cross-border leisure consumption and exchange between the two regions.
