Regional Medical Center expands emergency department in East San Jose

Regional Medical Center in East San Jose has expanded its emergency department, increasing the number of emergency beds from 34 to 54. The $17 million construction project was funded by Santa Clara County following its acquisition of the hospital in April 2025.

Since the county took over from previous owner HCA Healthcare, the facility has seen a significant rise in utilization. The emergency department now treats approximately 80,000 patients annually, a 22% increase from the period prior to the county takeover. Additionally, the number of surgeries performed by doctors has risen by 46% over the past year.

The expansion aims to restore services that were previously downgraded or closed under corporate ownership, such as trauma, stroke, and maternity care. As the only hospital in East San Jose, the center serves a diverse and economically disadvantaged population, including many uninsured residents, immigrant communities, and Latino and Asian populations.
