Regional NSW councils weigh costs of hosting NRL games

Regional councils in New South Wales are facing a financial dilemma regarding the cost of hosting National Rugby League (NRL) matches. While councils must provide six-figure outlays to NRL clubs to secure games, these events can generate significant economic boosts for local businesses.

For example, a Penrith match in Mudgee injected an estimated $3.67 million into the local economy, and the NRLW Magic Round in Wagga generated between $3 million and $5 million. However, Mid-Western Regional Council Mayor Des Kennedy noted the difficulty in justifying these costs to ratepayers struggling with financial pressures.

The number of regional venues hosting premiership fixtures has declined from six venues four years ago to just two this season. The only confirmed regional fixture for 2027 is the Penrith Panthers' annual trip to Bathurst.
