Regional NSW health initiatives target senior wellbeing and youth mental health

New research and community-led initiatives in New South Wales are addressing specific mental health and wellbeing needs for different age groups.

On the Mid North Coast, Charles Sturt University researchers have developed a wellbeing clinic model for residents aged 65 and over. The two-year study found that seniors require more than just medical care, emphasizing the need for social connection, safety, and practical support to maintain independence. Dr. Patricia Mackey noted that the model aims to alleviate pressure on traditional health services by addressing loneliness and social isolation.

In the Far North Coast region, the non-profit Human Nature is implementing an alternative approach to youth mental health for 14- to 18-year-olds. Rather than relying on traditional clinic settings, the organization uses a model that provides therapeutic support in homes, schools, and natural environments. The program focuses on long-term outcomes for a smaller cohort, reporting successes such as reduced hospital admissions and improved engagement with education and employment.
