Regional NSW launches water security action plan

Local Government NSW (LGNSW) and the NSW Water Directorate have launched a six-point Regional Water Action Plan to strengthen water security and renew aging infrastructure across regional New South Wales. The initiative aims to support local water utilities that serve nearly two million people in rural and remote areas.

The plan addresses significant funding gaps identified by the NSW Auditor-General, who noted that approximately $1 billion is required to keep existing infrastructure operational. Broader sector estimates suggest total priority investment needs could reach $5 billion.

LGNSW President Darcy Byrne emphasized that access to safe and reliable water is a basic human right that underpins public health, agriculture, and the economy. He noted that many councils are currently struggling to maintain aging systems and absorb rising costs without long-term funding certainty. Sharon Cadwallader, Mayor of Ballina Shire Council, added that achieving security requires not only infrastructure but also sensible regulation, a skilled workforce, and improved collaboration.
