Central Europe elections: Political debates intensify over mobility and unity
As municipal and Senate elections approach in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, political activity is intensifying. In Prague, experts from the Institute of Planning and Development (IPR) highlight challenges in urban mobility, noting that the city has three times more cars than Copenhagen and a growing number of vehicles per capita, which impacts pedestrians and climate resilience.
In Slovakia, political tension is rising as Branislav Gröhling, leader of the SaS party, has called for opposition unity and a common reform minimum. He has also engaged in discussions with Igor Matovič, who announced plans to hold events in all regional cities except Bratislava on November 17. While Gröhling seeks a unified front, he has expressed reservations about including the non-parliamentary Hungarian Coalition in such joint efforts.
In various Czech cities, candidates are presenting diverse visions. In Ostrava, Richard Vereš (ANO) is focusing on improving housing, safety, and transport. In Prague, STAN candidate Petr Hlaváček is advocating for the expansion of the Metropolitan Plan to allow for 350,000 new apartments and the development of Metro D, despite its projected cost of over 100 billion CZK.
