Sweden Riksdag to vote on Elisabeth Thand Ringqvist for Prime Minister

The Swedish Riksdag is scheduled to hold a vote on Elisabeth Thand Ringqvist, leader of the Center Party, as a candidate for Prime Minister on Tuesday, November 3, at 13:00. This follows a period of political deadlock after the September 2026 elections, where the center-left bloc secured 176 seats and the right-wing bloc obtained 173 seats in the 349-seat parliament.

Thand Ringqvist has attempted to form a centrist coalition but has not secured the necessary parliamentary support. If her candidacy is rejected, the mandate to form a government will pass to Ulf Kristersson, leader of the Moderate Party. If a Prime Minister is not successfully appointed after four parliamentary votes, it could trigger an early election.

Political leaders have exchanged criticism regarding the government formation process. Magdalena Andersson, leader of the Social Democrats, has criticized Speaker Andreas Norlén for the timing and nature of the vote, while other political actors have pointed to the difficulty of building a functional majority amidst conflicting demands from various parties.
