Regional recycling initiatives launched in Venezuela and Mexico
In Venezuela, the ‘Aragua Recicla en Educación’ plan has been launched in the state of Aragua to promote ecological culture within schools. The pilot program begins in four municipalities: Santiago Mariño, Rafael Revenga, Francisco Linares Alcántara, and San Sebastián de los Reyes. The initiative aims to establish student ecological brigades in all regional schools, led by coordinating teachers.
The program focuses on both pedagogical and economic sustainability. By collecting recyclable materials through a barter system, schools can receive direct financial resources or essential items such as playground equipment, trash containers, tables, and chairs for dining areas.
In Mexico City, a legislative proposal has been introduced to require supermarkets with a surface area of 2,000 square meters or more to provide permanent spaces for recycling. Proposed by Deputy Claudia Montes de Oca del Olmo, the reform to the Mercantile Establishments and Environmental laws seeks to use commercial hubs as collection points for materials to be processed by authorized recyclers.
