South American regions face environmental emergencies from fires and water shortages

Multiple regions in South America are facing environmental emergencies due to widespread fires and water shortages. In Peru, forest fires have affected thousands of hectares across several regions, including Junín, Ayacucho, and Cusco. These fires particularly threaten indigenous Asháninka communities and ancestral forests, with some blazes remaining active for over ten days. In Arequipa, officials report that 100% of recorded forest fires were human-caused. Additionally, 76 districts in Ayacucho have been declared in a state of emergency due to a critical water deficit caused by lack of rainfall and high temperatures.

In Ecuador, firefighters from Latacunga are providing specialized support to combat large-scale forest fires in the Chimborazo province. Meanwhile, in the province of Pastaza, humanitarian aid including food and sleeping kits is being distributed to families in Sarayacu who lost their homes to fire.

Residential fires have also caused significant local damage, including a house fire in Guayaquil, Ecuador, that left elderly residents injured, and a structure fire in Rawson, Argentina, that resulted in the death of a pet and left the building at risk of collapse.
