Regional trends show diverging teenage pregnancy rates

Teenage pregnancy rates are showing divergent trends in different regions. In the Las Tunas municipality of Cuba, the rate rose by three percentage points to 19% during the first half of 2026. This increase occurred despite local authorities conducting nearly 5,000 family planning consultations and 71 educational activities. Officials noted that the issue is linked to structural challenges, including shortages of contraceptives and inadequate sexual education.

In contrast, the municipality of La Paz has seen a 31% reduction in births among mothers aged 15 to 19 between 2021 and 2025. Despite this decline, authorities emphasize that pregnancies in girls under the age of 15 remain a critical concern, often associated with sexual violence and rights violations. The national strategy aims to reach zero pregnancies in girls under 15 by 2030 through improved access to scientific information and healthcare services.
