Regional updates on disaster risk management in Tapachula and Ayacucho

In Tapachula, Mexico, municipal authorities have introduced an updated Municipal Risk Atlas after an eleven-year hiatus. Endorsed by the National Center for Disaster Prevention, the tool is designed to guide responsible urban growth and strengthen civil protection. The new atlas utilizes 2D hydraulic modeling to project risks in the Texcuyuapan, Coatán, and Coatancito river basins through 2040, and includes chemical-technological risk assessments for gas stations and other facilities.

Conversely, in Ayacucho, Peru, regional authorities face significant challenges in disaster management. A recent report indicates that the Management of Risk, Defense, and Security lacks an approved and current Disaster Risk Prevention and Reduction Plan. The region also suffers from budgetary constraints, with insufficient funds allocated to vulnerability reduction and emergency response. The Regional Council has recommended the implementation of pending management plans and increased budget allocations to support the Regional Emergency Operations Center (COER).
