Regional U.S. carriers expand into broadband and satellite services
Regional U.S. carriers are shifting their business models to integrate broadband, satellite, and AI infrastructure. Tim Donovan, CEO of the Competitive Carriers Association, noted that operators are moving away from being pure-play mobile providers to focus on reaching customers through various access methods, such as extending fiber to homes or using fixed wireless in rural areas.
Satellite connectivity is increasingly viewed as a tool to eliminate coverage gaps rather than a primary revenue stream. This evolution comes as consumer habits shift; data from S&P Global Market Intelligence indicates that 16% of respondents do not subscribe to traditional wired home broadband. Instead, these consumers utilize fixed wireless, satellite, or mobile data.
Demographic trends show that younger consumers are more likely to forgo wired connections, with 23% of 18-to-24-year-olds lacking wired internet. Drivers for adopting alternative services include rural location constraints and mobile plan bundling, with 43% of satellite users citing a lack of wired options in rural areas as their primary motivation.
