Regular Walking and Community Exercise Cut Dementia Risk and Boost Senior Health
A daily 30‑minute walk is highlighted as a simple, low‑impact activity that improves cardiovascular fitness, supports weight control, enhances balance and coordination, and helps prevent chronic conditions such as hypertension and diabetes. Experts note that consistent walking also preserves muscle mass and reduces the risk of falls among older adults.
A four‑year study of 2,578 seniors in Habikino, Osaka, Japan found that participants who attended weekly group exercise and social activities in local community centers experienced a 50% lower risk of cognitive decline compared with non‑participants. The benefit was most pronounced among seniors who did not already engage in regular physical activity, and the program also helped maintain physical function.
